Coming of Age in Korea

Book and lyrics by Fred Newman, music by Annie Roboff
Directed by Gabrielle L. Kurlander and Desmond Richardson

Friday, January 16 – Sunday, March 1, 2009

It's the end of the Korean War and three young GIs from New York City — one Latino, one Black and one Jewish — confront the harassment of the brass, the racism of the military and the brutality of the United States occupation of South Korea.

Coming of Age in Korea also features music by Fred Newman and Grammy-nominated composer Annie Roboff that takes us on a journey through the "coming of age" of American popular music — blues, swing, doo-wop, rock and country. This Castillo classic will be directed by Gabrielle L. Kurlander, president and CEO of the All Stars Project, partnering with world-renowned dancer and choreographer Desmond Richardson, co-artistic director of Complexions Contemporary Ballet.

Here's what one of our audience-goers had to say about Coming of Age in Korea:

“I would like to say how much I enjoyed the performance on Sunday. I was completely inspired by the talent and commitment I witnessed, and at the ability of all those involved to create a world, and then welcome us, the audience, into it. I felt honored to see such creative and beautiful people at work.”— Annabelle Hird
